The third iteration of the Beckett biennial festival takes place in Liverpool later in the month. Originated by Enniskillen actor Adrian Dunbar in association with Unreal Cities and the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Irish Studies, the varied programme includes lectures, performances, films, and discussions centred on the author’s work and life. This year’s event is titled Beckett: Lieben 2026 and will explore Beckett’s fascination with German expressionism, which he first encountered through his relationship with the Sinclair family in Kassel in the 1930s. The full programme reflects the impact of German painters, writers and theatre makers on Beckett’s life and oeuvre.
The opening keynote will be delivered by Mark Nixon touching on the recently-published German Diaries which he co-edited. Theatre director Walter Asmus will take part in a Q&A and there is a are opportunity to view the short films Eh Joe (1986) by Alan Gilsenan, and The Goad (1965) by Paul Joyce. Conference coordinator Dunbar will direct performances of Come and Go and Play, and Irish photographer John Minahan will also take part, among a varied and packed programme.
